When I can’t stand sitting in the cabin any longer, I walk outside to see Shandra and Dorian talking to Destiny. They all must have heard me open the door because they turn to look at me.

“You feel like telling us your side of the story?” Shandra asks me.

“No,” I say. I don’t think my side of the story is going to change anything, and I don’t want to chance Destiny blabbing about me and Avery kissing the other night. I don’t know that she would do that since she apparently doesn’t want to tarnish Avery’s reputation, but whatever. I don’t want to talk to anyone about any of this.

Shandra says, “Then all I have to go on is what Destiny told me. She said you got angry with her when you both had a disagreement over where to steer your raft. You jumped at her when she didn’t want to do what you wanted. That’s what she told me.”

What a dumb story, but at least I know Destiny isn’t going to chance saying anything about me and Avery so she can keep him safe.

Shandra pauses as if she thinks I’ll add on to this ridiculous story. Then she says, “Will you apologize and promise to do your best to get along?”

I fold my arms. “No. I’m not going to apologize if I don’t mean it.”

Shandra nods solemnly. “I’m glad you don’t give out meaningless apologies, but that means we’re going to have to ban you from camp activities until you two can work out whatever’s going on between you.”

“But Destiny gets to enjoy the upcoming activities?” I ask.

“Yes. I didn’t see any violence on her end, but I saw you jump at her and push her into the water—which was very dangerous by the way.”

“Got it,” I say, holding Shandra’s gaze. I have to avoid eye contact with Destiny or I’ll get all worked up again, and that’s not going to do me any favors. “Are we going to eat dinner soon?”

“We are.” Shandra nods. “So, feel free to hang around near the cabins.”

“Okay,” I reply.

I see Chief by himself, so I walk over to him. The dog wags his tail when he sees me. I scratch behind his ears.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t mad, but I’m not going to apologize to Destiny. So, I’ll deal with it.

Everyone’s acted pretty nice to me in Fairgarden, but I know what Destiny said is true—at least for about half of the people I’ve met. I don’t think Kevin or Lulu have anything against me, but I’m not sure about Rona or Eric, and Destiny hates me. As for the adults, I honestly have no idea what they really think about me. Since I lost my temper with Destiny, I’ve probably ruined any chance of them ever trusting me. It’s possible I could rectify that by telling them why I did what I did, but…

“Avery, you should sit by me for dinner.” Destiny’s whiny voice grates on my ears. I look up to see what she’s playing at.
