CHAPTER EIGHT

It's a rare slow day at The Cosy Little Tea Room and the bright summer sun is casting a golden glow over the cafe. I've been working here for a few months now and I'm beginning to learn the schedule - Thursday afternoons always tend to lull in the middle, so during a quiet spell, I ask Holly if it's okay if I take my lunch break now.

Sat at a table by the window with a generous helping of Holly's special carrot cake and a hot chocolate, I start to scribble down notes in my jotter. This is exactly how I pictured it when I first arrived in Lily Vale Village, just me with my ideas in this adorable little cafe, the words flowing from my pen like an unstoppable waterfall of inspiration.

While there's no customers, Holly comes over and joins me, clutching her mug of coffee and a slice for herself. 'So, how's the cottage coming along?' She glances at the door every now and then, just to make sure she's not caught short if any customers do decide to pop in.

'It's going great, I think my Mum will be shocked when she sees, hopefully in a good way!' I giggle, licking the gorgeous cream cheese icing from my lips. 'Alex is putting new carpets in this week, he helped me pick out this silvery grey shade that will match the wallpaper perfectly.'

Holly gives me a knowing look over the rim of her mug. 'And how is everything going with Alex?'

'What do you mean?' I say, ducking my head like a child caught sneaking sweets.

'Don't play innocent with me, Lucy Middleton. I know that look well.'

'What look?'

'The look of lurve,' Holly singsongs the word, sending me up. 'It's clear as day on your face that you have a thing for him.'

'A thing for Alex Preston?' I laugh a little too loudly, not quite able to meet her gaze as I stuff the remains of carrot cake into my mouth, spluttering crumbs everywhere as I attempt to convince her otherwise. 'Not bloody likely, Hol.'

'I see how moony-eyed you go when you talk about him, you can deny it all you like, but that dreamy look doesn't lie.' Holly wipes up the mess I've made, she's such a clean freak, unable to relax when things are left untidy. 'I can't say I blame you, those brown eyes are pretty easy to get lost in.'

'That's crazy, we're just friends. And barely even that, he's just doing work for me, that's all.' I pick up my hot chocolate and slurp the cream. 'Besides, his eyes are green, not brown.'

'Aha!' Holly folds her arms in triumph, and I'm suddenly embarrassingly aware that she's caught me out good and proper. 'You're simply proving my point right there. Face it, girl - you're smitten.'

I tut at her, shaking my head and dive back to my notes. That is one thing I'm definitely not ready to face, not when there's too much else to focus on.
