Chapter 8

JORDAN

Jordan watched Ana as she slept, curled in a ball on the seat next to his, covered in a blanket. Her cheek rested against the brown leather, and her dark eyelashes cast shadows onto her face. While sleeping, she appeared so young and unguarded. She also seemed delicate and soft, somehow.

He shook his head. Soft. Not a word typically used to describe Ana. He could come up with better choices. Cold. Unyielding. Obstinate. But not soft. Never soft.

He rubbed his eyes, wishing he could sleep, but knowing it would be impossible. They had landed briefly in Istanbul to go through customs and refuel, and now they headed toward Kayseri, a city located in an area of central Turkey known as Cappadocia. Ana told him they would travel by car once they got to the airport, but she shared nothing else. He had no idea where they were going or what they would do once they got there.

Jordan pulled out his laptop and researched everything he could find on Cappadocia. The photos were fantastic. He read that long ago, after volcanoes erupted over the flat plains of the region, ancient people carved houses and entire villages into the soft rock left from the volcanic deposits. One city, located entirely underground, had eleven floors and was more than eighty-five meters deep. Jordan tried to wrap his mind around the concept as he stared at the photos. He’d never heard of this area before. Jordan saw pictures of rocks that had eroded over the centuries. Formed by wind and weather, the structures looked like something other-worldly. The locals called them fairy chimneys. The entire region was vast and amazing, dotted with the most incredible natural rock formations he had ever seen.

Jordan glanced at Ana’s sleeping form. Why was she taking him to Cappadocia? He stroked the keys of his laptop and decided to initiate a new search. But he wasn’t even sure how to word it or where to start.

He typed in Amazon Warriors. Everything he read made it sound like the Amazons were a long-dead myth about tremendously strong and heartless female warriors who were enormous and utterly fearless. Jordan chuckled as he glanced at the girl dozing next to him. She might be brave, but she would never have been considered large. She was positively dainty.

Ana made a small sound in her sleep, and Jordan pulled the blanket closer around her shoulders. She shifted in her seat, snuggling against him with a contented sigh, her cheek resting against his bicep, and one of her arms flung across his chest.

Jordan froze, unsure what to do. If she woke like this, it would be his fault, and she would be angry with him, but it felt perfect for her to be holding him like this, even in her sleep. He leaned back in his seat and relaxed, his computer still perched on the table in front of him. Ana didn’t wake, so he figured he was safe for the moment. He went back to work on his laptop.
