SPEEDING away, I ask Ruby to make a pact.
“You swear to never do that again?” I ask with as much compassion I can muster.
Ruby drives like a bat-girl out of hell.
“Yes, never again. I swear on it,” Ruby gasps, shaking off the terror.
The tires hug the steaming pavement and screech as Ruby heads out on the freeway.
“I should’ve shot out his tires.”
“Do you know what it’s like to see your life pass before your eyes?”
As calmly as I can, I stroke Ruby’s red hair.
“Ruby, I’m so sorry that happened.”
“It’s like judgment day, and the only one judging you in the end is you.”
“Ruby, just flip that script. Just pretend you went for a run in the desert and now we’re on our way to see Penny,” I say, paranoid and looking out the back window of the Buick.
Ruby breathes heavily and it’s not because she is out of shape—she’s out of her mind. Due to the trauma, her nervous system shut down and so did her emotions.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Ruby says, seemingly controlling her nerves.
“Listen to me, Ruby, don’t sweat it. All right?” I ask. “Just don’t sweat what happened at all. It never happened. You’re okay.”
Like it never happened to her, “Where you’d learn to shoot a rifle?”
“My uncles taught me every deer season,” I say.
Ruby falls into silence. She stares straight ahead. “We should be in San Diego in no time.”
Like a beautiful motion picture, the mountains and desert sands move all around us in living color. Nature comes alive with a vibrant glow. The energy is sweeping and the sky is massive. The vibe of the terrain is different now, just like me and Ruby, forever changed by our road trip. And it’s only just begun. I can see ahead—the edge is near, and it’s a different edge than the border at Juarez. The line in the sand we just crossed is the California state line.
Ruby says, “Look, there it is! Welcome to California. Entering Pacific Time.”
A rush goes through both our heads. It’s the sweetest sensation I’ve felt on this entire trip.
“Don’t say anything to Penny,” Ruby demands, diminishing the moment.
“No sweat,” I say, easing my seat back.
“I’ll use it for my acting,” Ruby says, making peace with herself.
I can’t blame her for that. “Okay,” I say, using my shirt to wipe the sweat from my face.
Ruby leans in for a kiss. “I love you, Sis.” Hooking her hand around my neck, she pulls me close and kisses me on the cheek. I think, wow, I feel so close to her and so far away at the same time.
“I love you, too, Ruby.”
The sun is up close and personal now that it’s reaching noon. No wonder indigenous people worship the sun. Out here in the desert, it commands attention and power of focus. The sun tricks you into loving it—it throws its essence in auric shades of pink love against the hills, and momentarily blinds you from the road ahead. It gives you faith that you must move forward through the blindness.
