Chapter 16

Ricki and Clay pulled out of the hospital parking lot and headed back to the medical building, intending to pick up Anchorman. Expecting him to have Cheron in tow, they were surprised when he stood on the curb alone, waiting for them. Once he’d climbed into the SUV and buckled his seatbelt, he leaned back and closed his eyes.

Bracing a hand against the center console, Ricki twisted around so she could see him. “Where’s Cheron?”

The former Marine didn’t open his eyes as he settled more comfortably into the seat. “She should be at the airport right now, waiting for her plane.”

It didn’t take Ricki long to connect the dots. “You sent her home?”

He opened one eye. “She decided to go home after we discussed it. If I get tossed into prison, we agreed she can come back.”

“How did you talk her into that?” Ricki asked. Cheron might have looked fragile enough to get blown over in a stiff wind, but she usually did exactly what she wanted, and it was hard to believe that the doctor had wanted to leave.

“I told her that there were still two shooters out there and it was dangerous for her to be here, which made her a distraction for me. And if I’m distracted, I can’t guarantee I’ll duck so fast next time.”

Clay reached up to adjust the rearview mirror, both his eyes meeting the one Anchorman had open. “And she bought that?”

Ricki used two fingers to pinch the bridge of her nose. “That’s because he told Cheron that the first bullet was aimed at him, and because he dove for the ground so fast, it hit Jerome instead.”

“Is that what you think?” Clay asked.

She nodded. “Yeah. Pretty much. How about you?”

“The thought had crossed my mind.” Clay maneuvered their vehicle onto US Highway 441 and headed south. The ride back to Pigeon Forge had an underlying sense of urgency for the two people occupying the front seat. Their backseat passenger, however, slept most of the way home.

Halfway through the hour-long drive, Ricki gave up trying to follow Anchorman’s example. She stared out the side window for a few minutes before shifting in her seat for the third time.

“Something bothering you?” Clay asked, keeping his voice low.

“This whole case bothers me.”

He smiled. “Anything specific?”

She stared out the front windshield. “Why try to kill Anchorman now?”

Clay rested one wrist on top of the steering wheel. “I have to agree. If they were shooting at him, they were trying to kill him. But if that was their intent, why wouldn’t they have done that at the same time they killed Kelly? Anchorman drank the bourbon, too, or whatever was laced with ketamine. He would have been just as easy a target as Kelly.”

“But not as easy to carry. Even if there were two of them.” Ricki pondered that as she continued to stare at the countryside passing the window. “Maybe there was some significance to where Kelly was found?”

Clay snorted at that. “Lying across the
