Stavro walked Rayelle home after dinner. Before she’d finished her stew, her eyelids began to droop. She’d pushed her body to its limits, and she could barely force her legs to carry her back to the cottage.

Stavro opened the front door for her. “I’m not sure how you’ll feel after a night’s rest, but I planned to visit Didero in the morning. Only an hour’s carriage ride from here. There’s a woman there due to give birth within the next two months.”

Rayelle’s eyes lit up. “I’d love to come.” At the moment, her body didn’t agree with that level of enthusiasm, but she was sure she’d be fine to travel after a good night’s sleep on a proper bed. Especially if she didn’t have to go on foot.

Stavro grinned. “Perfect. Be out front at quarter past seven.”

Rayelle nodded and walked to her room. She shut the door behind her and collapsed on the bed, then winced. She’d forgotten she’d left her brush there earlier. She pulled it from under her back and settled on the soft mattress.

Abis mewled as he slunk from the closet, stretched his front legs, and approached the bed. He cocked his head to the side, then sprang onto the mattress and curled beside her.

“I miss her, too.” Rayelle stroked the cat’s fur, then glanced at the bedside table. Shamir’s book sat there. Still unopened.

Rayelle had studied scriptures her whole life, but now it seemed like the most unappealing thing in the world. After striving to keep every rule meticulously, what did she have to show for it? She was in a small town with hardly any births to bless, she’d lost the one person she felt safest with, and she may have facilitated the end of the world as they knew it by allowing Paladin to escape.

She missed her own bed. Missed the enclave. Most of all, she missed her family. She sighed and curled her knees into her chest. Didero was in the wrong direction, but Stavro had said they could go to Calwaen at some point. Tomorrow she would plan a date.

Rayelle closed her eyes and dozed, never entirely falling into a deep sleep. Images of flickering black bonds and swirling, soul-sucking emptiness kept her mind hovering above relaxation and rest. She turned on her side in groggy frustration and noticed the room was dark. How long had she lain here in her clothes?

Abis lifted his head next to her.

“Sorry.” Rayelle sighed and patted his head. She yawned and was about to pull off her blouse when she froze. Something or someone was tapping on the window.
