Chapter 16-
Anna and Simon slipped out the back exit of the restaurant before Abramovichâs security team began to pile into the restaurant. They were in the back lane of their hotel across the street as half a dozen security men were assessing the carnage left behind in the struggle inside the restaurant.
Anna and Simon slipped into their hotel and moved along the hallway unnoticed, partially because the evening staff was more interested in the football game on the television than any guests that may have been wandering the halls.
They rode up the elevator in silence both feeling confused and frustrated with the little information that Josh was able to share before he died.
Simon was the first to speak, âDid you have any idea William had someone else on this operation?â
âI didnât even know you were in until I was at the safehouse. And even then, I wonder if William would have told me if I hadnât run into you,â Anna snapped.
The elevator ding alerted Anna and Simon that they had reached their floor and as it glided to a smooth stop the doors quietly slid open. Anna stepped out of the elevator hoping it would be vacant as she glanced over at Simonâs bloodied white shirt and her dress that was stained with Joshâs blood.
She was sure if someone had seen them that they would have attracted the attention of the police or security. Neither of which was of interest to Anna nor Simon.
Simon reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out the room pass key as they neared their room. The sound of sliding drawers and a closet being slammed shut came from the other side of their hotel room door. Simon quickly passed the room key over the black security pad and the light went from red to green followed by a click indicating the lock had been released.
Simon turned the handle and pushed the door open into the room and suddenly stopped with the force of the door latch that was flipped over from inside the room. Simon smashed the weight of his shoulder into the door repeatedly until on the fourth time, the screws holding the latch in place finally loosened from the frame.
Simon fell into the room stumbling his first couple of steps and then regaining his balance he made his way to the open window at the opposite end of the room.
The drapes fluttered with the wind that blew in through the open window and when Simon finally reached the window, he peered through to see two men getting into a black sedan that was waiting below.
âDamn it!â Simon exclaimed. âThat latch gave them just enough time to make it down.â
Simon turned and faced the mess strewn about the room.
Anna saw the contents of their bags emptied onto the floor of the room. Neither of them had many pieces of clothing, but whoever was in this room made a good attempt at removing each item as they searched for whatever they were sent to find.
