A Slave to the Ghetto – One of the more appalling clients I had was a young black man who lived with his mother in New York. It wasn't that he was personally appalling, but rather his situation. He had turned 18 and desperately wished to leave New York City and live on his own. However, his mother was completely dependent upon him and his younger siblings as the more children she could claim as dependents, the more government money she could receive. WIC, EBT, welfare, public housing, you name it, she was collecting it all because of her children. However, if my client were to leave his mother, daring to live a life of his own, she (and the rest of the family) would view him as a traitor as they would qualify for less

government money. His mother held this over his head as a mighty weight of guilt for daring to leave the family.
