CHAPTER FOUR

I noticed my red dress was a little bit rumpled when we got back into the car. It didn’t matter. It still fit in all the ways that made me look and feel beautiful. And I was with a man who did the same. The driver pulled the car around to Komi, one of the top restaurants in the city. I had never been there before. I wouldn’t have been able to afford such a thing.

“It’s all ours for the afternoon. I wanted to reserve it for tonight, but they couldn’t let me on such short notice. Maybe another time.” Ken got out of the Rolls and went around to the other side to let me out. I stepped out, the sensation of pleasure still strong in my body. Ken really had turned me into an object of pure delight on this day. I noticed he was carrying the box that I saw before, but I didn’t want to press him. He’d reveal it in his own time.

We walked together, arm in arm, into the restaurant. There was a waiter who quietly led us to our table, and of course, we were the only people in the whole place.

“Can I bring you any drinks?”

“We’ll have a bottle of pinot noir. French. Your best.” Ken reached out and held my hand as the waitress walked off to pull a bottle of wine. It was so strange that I had a man like this, who could give all of these things to me. But one thing troubled me.

“Why have we only gone places where we’re alone? Are you ashamed to be seen with me?” My worry from earlier started to sink back in. The waitress came back by with our wine, pouring a glass for Ken to taste. He took a sniff of the wine and a sip, closing his eyes and evaluating.

“Yes, we’ll have this. As for food, bring us the chef’s choice. Have him wow us.” He waved the waitress away and turned back to me. “Keyanah. Of course not.” Ken paused and poured me a glass of wine. I took a sip, waiting for a better explanation than just “of course not.” Ken took another sip of wine and sat there, relishing the dark, sweet taste of it.

“Then what? Why?”

“I’m not good with people. I assume you know that by now. But let me tell you — I’ve been betrayed too many times, and I keep the people I care about close. Everyone else I keep far from me. I don’t want to hide that I’m with you. I’m proud to be with such a smart, strong woman. A woman so beautiful.” He rested his hand on my thigh and moved it up to squeeze me. He loved my thighs. “I don’t like being around people who use me for my money, or people who want to. That’s not who I am. That’s why I’m so comfortable with you. I know you’ve been looking at funding for graduate programs when you know I can take care of it.
