“Can you hear me?”

“Loud and clear. Tell Isa to say something into hers.”

“I can hear you guys just fine. Can you hear me alright?”

“Yes. We’re good to go. Be safe you two…”

“We’re right here in case anything goes wrong. We’ve got you.”

Maxwell Pierce’s voice in my ear made me stand a little straighter in the dark alleyway outside the garage. The neon sign was off now, but in the daylight this was Dmitry’s auto body business. A light poured from the window over the door, and the sound of rough men’s laughter dribbled out into the alleyway like an audible oil slick.

Isabeau stood beside me, both of us wearing microphones the size of pencil leads taped to our chests beneath draping blouses. Apparently, when you were a billionaire, you could get almost anything overnighted from your private residence. I shook my head, trying to escape the feeling of guilt welling up inside of me at the thought.

I would never be able to repay Isabeau, much less these two men who had come into our lives like forces of nature. The idea of accepting their help chafed, but Alex’s life was on the line. Even if it was humiliating, I had to set my pride aside and do what was necessary.

I straightened my skirt and picked up the duffel bag full of money.

“Ready for this?”

Isabeau gave me a quick side-hug. “Ready.”

She gave me a tight-lipped smile, and I smiled back, trying for once to be the reassuring one. To support her this time. I could at least do that much.

“Let’s do this. The sooner we’re done, the sooner we can go get drunk at the hotel bar.”

Isabeau laughed. “Amen.”

We set off toward that window of light, our heels clip-clopping across the pavement. I took a deep breath, suddenly wondering why the hell we were doing something this stupid. The knowledge that Mr. Drake and my Maxwell were just around the corner, ready to come to our rescue was reassuring, but not completely satisfying. After all, what if these guys had guns? We didn’t bring anything with us but fists and cell phones. Unless, of course, the guys were holding out on us.

We were fucked if there was a real conflict. Luckily, this was real life and not a Jason Statham movie, so I prayed we’d be all right. After all, the dude just wanted his money. Not to massacre two women in his garage.

I hoped.

I looked at my sister, took in her wide, frightened eyes, and wondered if I looked like that to her. At the last minute, I grabbed her arm and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

“For Alex,” I said.

She nodded, her face changing to an impassive mask. Her game face, I thought. I should put mine on, too. Did I even have one of those?

I knocked on the door, but when the raucous noise within didn’t falter, I reached for the handle. Inside, men sat at folding card tables, laughing and drinking beneath hanging lights. The skeletons of half-chopped cars glinted in the corners.
