Sara

Dressing up to go out to dinner was fun. Evan arranged a beautiful dress, and I recognized Marge when she came to drop it off. I can’t remember the last time I was dressed up like this.

But it was a long drive in the car, and by now, I’m uncomfortable in my clothes. My feet hurt from the heels I’m not used to wearing, and as sexy as the dress is, it’s revealing enough to make me want to cover up. When Evan was drooling over me, it was flattering. Now, I feel out of place.

Evan is nervous, I can tell. This business deal means a lot to him, and it seems like he’s intimidated by the twins. I have yet to meet them, but Evan’s nerves are contagious and I’m nervous, too.

I’m scared I won’t be able to pull it off, that I’ll let Evan down somehow.

“Oh, there they are,” Evan whispers to me and a moment later, four people climb out of a limousine. It’s not difficult to spot the twins – they are tall, broad-shouldered, and handsome in a GQ magazine kind of way. And they look the same.

They have black hair that’s been styled and cut in the same way, they're wearing identical suits, and they have the same look of perpetual disappointment on their faces. I can see why Evan might be intimidated.

Each of the twins has a woman on the arm. One is a fiery redhead, the other is blonde.

“Jacob, Jarryd,” Evan says, shaking hands with them both. How did he tell them apart? I’d like to introduce my wife to you. This is Sara.

The twins both shake my hand. When they say their names, I make a mental note. Jacob is the one with the redhead, Alison. The other is Jarryd, and his wife, Megan.

“Shall we?” Jacob asks and we all walk to the door. The seating hostess takes us to our table. When we sit down, I’m seated across from Alison. She smiles tightly at me. Her eyes take me in, sliding over my body and there is a lot of judgment in her eyes. I fight the urge to squirm.

When I look around, I feel even more out of place than before. The restaurant is very fancy. Everywhere, people are dressed in tuxedos and ballgowns. Alison and Megan are both wearing clothes that seem to be taken right off a runway. I feel underdressed, crazy as it seems. Even Evan, dressed as he is, seems like he should have done more.

Who are these people?

“So, Sara,” Jacob says. His face is expressionless. “How long have you and Evan been together?”

I glance at Evan. We never talked about the specifics.

“Well, we grew up together,” I say, putting my hand on his leg. “You could say we’ve been together forever.” I laugh, but no one seems to think it’s funny.

“And how long have you been married?” Jarryd asks.

Before I can answer, Evan jumps in. “Only a couple of months.”

The brothers glance at each other.

While the men talk, I look at Alison again.
