Chapter 5

The Armor Described

(Eph. 6:14-17)

Having told believers to "put on" (Eph. 6:11) and "take" (v. 13) the whole armor of God, Paul then described the armor in verses 14-17.

Girdle of Truth

The first part of armor mentioned is the girdle of truth: "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth" (v. 14).

Concerning truth, Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Since Jesus Christ is the personification of truth, to put on the girdle of truth is to "put... on the Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 13:14). Because He is God, Jesus Christ is the embodiment of all truth.

Not only is Jesus Christ the truth, but the Word of God is also truth. Concerning His own, Jesus asked the Father: "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Christ is the Living Word and the Bible is the written Word, and these together form the believer's girdle of truth.

If we want to be protected against the attacks of the Evil One, we must know Jesus Christ as Saviour and be faithful students of the Word of God. The written Word directs our attention to the Living Word. The better we really know the Scriptures, the more we will want to please God in everything we do.

The psalmist said, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (119:11). This shows us the effect of the Word in a believer's life. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is quick [living], and powerful, and
