I glanced nervously at the sky. We still had a good amount of time before the sun set, and if she saw a wolf with goat horns, she might be terrified and scream for her parents.

Gerard did his best to lean over. “Hi. My name is Gerard. This is my friend, Ismae.” He gestured toward me, though I had kept my distance and couldn’t even see the little girl until she poked her head around his leg. Her blond hair almost looked pink, but it couldn’t be out here. Her bright eyes widened when she spotted me. “Oh wow! Look at the size of that Fenrir!”

“Ah, she is not Fenrir, though I can see why you would think so.” He smiled.

“Good. Because Fenrir is horrible.”

“You know the stories?”

“Mother used to tell us all about him!”

Gerard gestured toward me. “You can go see her. She won’t harm you. Ismae, lay down so she isn’t so intimidated.”

I did as he requested, knowing we would be done for if the little girl screamed.

The child wasn’t frightened of me at all. She walked right over and started rubbing my nose and head. “Look at these horns!” she exclaimed, tracing her fingers over the curl.

Having her so close, I realized her hair was actually pink. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, revealing a human ear with a fae tip. My heart skipped. She must have been part fae.

“Leata would love to see her. Can I go get my sister?”

Gerard glanced around the building again. “Only if we can hide in your barn while we rest.”

“What happened to your leg?” The little girl kept her hand on my head while bluntly pointing to Gerard’s leg.

“It got broken.”

“Ouch.” She held up her finger. “I broke my finger once. Mommy made a special thing to help it. She called it a . . .” She paused in thought.

“Salve?” Gerard offered.

“Yes! That! How did you know?”

He chuckled. “It so happens, I know a thing or two about salves myself. Do you know if she still has that salve?”

The girl lowered her hands to her sides. “No. Mommy is in the woods.” She looked toward the Weeping Woods. “We see her at sunset, though! You can come meet her! Maybe she can help you!”

Woods? Sunset? I gave Gerard a wary look, but he didn’t meet my gaze.

“Right now, I just need a nap,” Gerard said. “Is that all right?”

The girl pouted. “Okay. Come on!” She skipped around the barn and through the propped-open door. “Daddy has the horse out. He’s getting us ready to take everything to Bertold for market day!”

Gerard sat down on a crate near the door and grimaced. He took in a breath and then slowly let it out through his nose.

I knew what he was doing, fishing for information to see if it was safe to stay. Thank goodness they were leaving, although I wished they had left last night. Then we wouldn’t have been found. Now they likely wouldn’t leave until morning. It was too late in the day to leave for Bertold.
