The rest of the day went by in an ever-thickening fog of alcohol. By the time Ahren woke up the next morning with his head pounding, he could hardly remember what had happened. He was lying stark naked on his bed, and his mouth tasted of something indefinable. Someone was knocking, which didn’t help his splitting headache. The sound must have woken him up, and he stumbled, groggy eyed to the door, picking up his Wind Blade just in case. He opened it and was surprised to see Khara facing him, her face impassive as always. She was wearing a loose tunic with long flowing sleeves and a silk belt, in the manner of the Eternal Empire.

‘We should train,’ she said, then pointed at his sword. ‘You have prepared, I see. But it is cold in the Weapons Hall, you should put something on.’ She pointed disinterestedly at Ahren’s nakedness, and the Paladin blushed, quickly hiding his body behind the door.

‘I’ll be with you in a heartbeat,’ he said, too embarrassed to simply decline her invitation. He quickly put on his clothes and stepped out of the room. Culhen was nowhere to be seen. Nor could he sense his soul animal.

‘Have you any idea where greedy-guts is?’ he asked, gesturing to Culhen’s stack of blankets in a corner of the room before closing the door.

‘He’s gone off with Falk and Onja. The two of them are going for a canter on Selsena in the meadows beyond the city, and Culhen is accompanying them. He seemed quite agitated,’ she explained disinterestedly.

‘Oh, is he playing chaperon now?’ Ahren teased, but his poor joke was wasted on Khara. ‘Never mind,’ he continued. ‘Let’s train.’
