The average American home uses 185 gallons (700 l) of water a day. The average African home goes through 1.8 gallons (6.6 l). Seventy-five percent of American water use is in the bathroom. In North America, nearly 100 percent of residents have access to a flushing toilet system; that figure is 92 percent in Europe. In Africa, it is less than 14 percent.

In Roanoke, Virginia, local charities raise money by building a toilet in someone’s yard and then charging for removing it. Neighbors can also pay $10 to have a toilet put in someone’s yard; the owner of the new “toilet” (they don’t really work) can then pay the charity $5 to have it removed. Permanent “no-toilet” insurance is also available for $20. The toilets are purple and pink; local contractors donate the labor.
