They were using the network of alleys that ran between the larger streets. Miska could see into the houses that lined the alleys. She saw people bathing in the glow of the moving images on their wall screens or holographic projectors. She saw tranced-in sense junkies, zoned-out regular junkies and among it all, worried families trying to go about their business to the seemingly ambient soundtrack of gunfire.

Miska checked the feed from Hradisky, Mass and Vido’s contact lenses. She did not like what she saw. It looked like they were sat in the back of a police APC. She opened a comms link to Uncle V.

‘What the fuck?’ she demanded.

‘It’s not what it looks like,’ he subvocalised back. ‘They’re friends.’

Deeper and deeper, she thought. Things were becoming more like her dad had predicted as they moved further from the mission objective. She heard the sound of harsh amplified music over engines. Torricone motioned for them to take cover as several vehicles sped past the head of the narrow alley they were in. Disciples. She wondered if they knew about the bodies they had left on the floor of the bar yet.

‘Where are you going?’ Miska asked Vido. He hesitated.

‘I’m not sure,’ he said. ‘Things are complicated. I’m not trying to be difficult, so please don’t blow my head up, but the Feds have roadblocks all over Pueblo Town. Can we talk again when we’ve managed to get out of here?’ Miska was less than happy but she severed the comms link and didn’t trigger the N-bombs. Torricone was striding away from them now. He no longer seemed to care about stealth. Miska and the others followed.
