CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Washington, D.C.
The Following Morning
It was early, just after eight in the morning. And the plaza that faced the National Mall was filling up with hundreds of thousands of people who were already on the scene with thousands more set to arrive by the time of the pope’s address, which was scheduled for the noon hour. People had gathered overnight with some camping out in order to claim a small slice of land they could call their own as they listened to the man who represented the King of Kings.
Kimball Hayden, Isaiah, and Jeremiah had donned their armor wear to ready themselves in front of the crowds. Elsewhere, the Secret Service, Homeland Security and the FBI were managing the same. Carry bags were checked and metal detecting wands were waved for security reasons with every known technological safety measure utilized.
Few had been arrested due to disorderly conduct which had manifested from a sense of territoriality. Those who claimed their turf the night before believed that they had exclusive rights to the land, especially when a late arriver encroached. Fists were thrown after heated words were exchanged, hardly Christian acts but acts, nevertheless.
There were no guns or long-bladed knives confiscated, either. But a few of the Swiss-blade varieties were. But overall, the gathering of the masses was mostly peaceful with a few social missteps.
In the buildings that were close to the National Mall, the president’s protective detail and Homeland Security systematically cleared all the buildings but left a few sentries behind to keep these areas cordoned off to the public.
Shari Cohen, who was supposed to be stationed inside a building that had a direct view of the plaza’s eastside, failed to appear when scheduled. When 9:00 came and went with the minute hand closing in on the half hour, and with no response from her cellphone, a welfare check was conducted. Shari, however, was not home. Even though there was a consensus amongst the principals that she was either on her way or had been tied up in traffic, that line of thinking quickly falling short, however, because she would have contacted somebody regarding her tardiness. As of right now Shari Cohen was absent from duty, which became a cause for concern to Runyan after the Russian incident. Since Runyan did not want to float around rumors, he sent a unit to reexamine Shari’s steps beginning from last night, only to stop short of forming a full dragnet.
What Assistant Director Runyan could not foresee, however, was that for every minute that Shari Cohen remained missing, everything was edging closer to that one damnable moment.
The time was 10:30 a.m.
