Finding the balance point between putting out the fires burning right now, and looking for problems is tricky. Learning to be reactive during times of intense heat and also finding the time, no matter what, to plan and look ahead is challenging.
We all have a sense of reactiveness ingrained within us. Itâs easy to respond to email inquiries with relatively little planning ahead. Itâs simple to sit and wait for the phone to ring. Dealing with known problems is childâs play compared to seeking out issues and watering down the ember before it becomes a full-blown forest fire.
Putting out future fires is about having a mindset wherein you see past the current wildfires and donât get distracted by the noise of everyday business. Itâs about putting yourself in the shoes of customers, business partners, and associates and asking what could happen. What might derail the customer experience? What issue might the interns have today (again)? What will my associates, coworkers, or fellow entrepreneurs need from me today that will be easier to deal with in advance?
Current problems tend to drown out your time to look ahead. You must be intentional to avoid spending too much time on the most urgent issues.
Oftentimes it can seem like we are swimming in a sea of problems. The neat thing about problems is that at some point you will start to see patterns. If you are running a startup this might not be true right away, but eventually youâll realize Annie from accounting has the same problems every Friday afternoon when payroll is due and she canât figure out how to work Gusto.
You know your team and your environment better than you think. What problems can you foresee? What can you do about the problems now before the fire gets too big to manage? Better yet, what problems have occurred before that might happen again?
Once you start to think in this way, there is a danger of seeing everything as a problem, so with every piece of advice in this book be sure that you donât swing too far in the other direction. You donât want to start seeing problems that donât really exist, or forget to deal with the urgent issues your team is facing today.
A good entrepreneur works to solve current problems that require a good reactive manager. A next-level entrepreneur knows how to address the problem before it exists.
