The Decision

Sienna

Monday mornings were never my favorite, given I had to leave my cozy art cocoon and head into the office. However, I found myself with some extra pep after spending so much of the weekend with Finn. It could have been a disaster—especially since I freaked out on him—but he always put me at ease. I’d never felt that way about anyone else, and the calm I’d found with him carried me like the remnants of a wave into the office Monday.

As soon as I sat down, I saw the notification; meeting in thirty minutes for the announcement on the new client. Nerves tightened like a noose around my stomach, and I instantly regretted my decision to have a double cup of coffee and skip breakfast. I had been calm, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t bone-tired.

I fired off responses to the few emails that had come in over the weekend, and then hightailed it to Tamika’s desk. She was just coming in, with bags under her eyes and a leopard-print purse the size of an overnight bag slung over her shoulder.

“Morning, Tamika. Everything okay?” I asked, propping my chin on my hands at the top of her cubicle wall.

“Great, just great. Granny really needs a live-in aide, but I can’t afford it so I’ve been spending the weekends with her, trying to catch up on all the stuff I can’t do for her during the work week.”

“Oh, Tamika. I’m so sorry. Can I do anything to help? What about Trevor?”

“No, uh-uh. I’m not calling Trevor. I have to figure out a schedule, that’s all.” She pursed her lips, angry at the idea of calling her estranged brother.

Seeing that it was pointless, I changed tactics. “Did you sleep at all this weekend?”

“Loads. I need a quick cup of coffee, and I’ll be fine.”

“Coffee I can do. You stay here, I’ll grab us both a cup.” I tapped the top of the wall, and pretended not to notice when she sighed, and slumped down to her elbows on the desk as soon as I turned away.

I was pouring the second cup in the breakroom and adding the five sugar packets Tamika preferred when Bryan came blowing into the breakroom and leaned on his forearm next to me on the counter. He was always crowding into my personal space, and I resisted the urge to stomp on his shiny shoes to get him to back up. Instead, I ignored him.

“Sienna, we need to chat.”

“Really? I assumed you got winded on the way to the coffeemaker,” I said drily.

“Ha-ha. Real comedian, aren’t you?”

“Nope, just trying to caffeinate before the meeting.” I pointedly dropped the crumpled packets into the trash can and began stirring. He did not take the hint.

“That’s what we need to talk about. Sutherland called me.”

I stiffened at the mention of his buddy who was one of the partner’s sons but tried not to show it. Please don’t let Bryan have the account, please, please.

“I’m sure we’ll all hear in”—I checked my watch—“five minutes, when the meeting starts.
