Thursday, April 21, 8:30 a.m. Paris.

Chavvah Shain was sitting in her office when she heard the click, click, click of Renaud’s cane echoing down the empty corridor.

So he’s back, most likely to gloat. She hated the sound of that cane. He didn’t need it. He said it made him look sophisticated. Ridiculous more like it.

Renaud Christian Yount strutted into her office. “Bonjour.”

Chavvah looked up. “Welcome back. How did it go?”

He let loose a pompous smile. “It went as I expected.” Without waiting for an invitation, he sat across from her.

“What name did you use this time?” She was curious because the names he chose often reflected his mood.

“Merikh, though it was lost on her.”

Renaud was his current name, but his birth name was Melech Sroel Abraham. Names had always been labels of convenience to him. He always selected names that meant something special. His birth name, Melech , meant “king.” His current name, Renaud , meant “counsel.”

“Merikh, huh? Excellent choice.”

Death. So he was in a playful mood. Good.

“As a matter of fact, in spite of what you thought about the trip, it was quite successful.”

“You don’t have to gloat.” Chavvah frowned. “I am still the prophet.”

“For a prophet, you’re not always right. How about Noah?”

Though Renaud was a Natural, he seemed ageless. As a prophet, Chavvah frequently anticipated the future, but Renaud always knew more about the past than he should. Though his body was mortal, ever since the day he came into his purpose in that cemetery, his mind seemed timeless. His spirit had a connection to an even greater evil.

“But you have to admit, back then we were close to discrediting the entire race of man,” Chavvah said, lowering her eyebrows. “Who would have thought God could find someone who would take up such a hopeless cause. You should have killed Noah or gotten a Natural to kill him.”

“God wouldn’t let me.”

Chavvah hated what God had done. “It was not just.”

“He makes the rules, but this time, even within His rules, we’ll win.” Renaud smiled. “When we’re through with the Naturals, most of them will belong to us. God can have the few who stick with Jesus; we’ll own the rest. And because we’ll do it within His rules, it’ll prove Him all the more wrong to have created them in the first place and us all the more right. When we observe Naturals at their worst, it’s not rust that has corroded them from the outside that we see. What we see is rot that has eaten its way out from the inside.” Renaud paused. “It’s about time God smelled all that rot.”

“But L and his kind will remain.”

“L doesn’t count. Awakens don’t count. Only Naturals do.” Renaud got a bitter look on his face as if he’d eaten something sour. “I hate calling them Naturals.”

Chavvah thought for a second. “ Attendez. Is this Dr. Spenser you met a Natural?”

Renaud chuckled. “Yes, but she’s no Noah. God can’t use her to help His cause like He used Noah.
