Adrian walked through one of the makeshift labyrinths that Myia and Elias had drawn into the sand behind the beach house. Lit only by moonlight, it gave the labyrinth an almost magical appearance. She wondered if the ancients had also used the symbol in such a way as well, making their way around the twisting patterns to the center as they’d contemplated.

They had taken Nick’s playful suggestion to heart. “It can’t hurt,” Myia said with a shrug. “And God knows we need ideas.”

Adrian had to admit that there was something calming about making her way through the paths of the ancient symbol. It forced her to concentrate on what was directly ahead of her, centering her focus.

Opposite her, Nick had already made it to the center of his own labyrinth. He was seated there, staring out at the restless waters, his brow furrowed the way it did whenever he was in deep concentration. Elias was still making his way through the labyrinth he’d drawn for himself, looking deep in thought as well. Behind them, Myia was seated cross-legged on the sand, a beer in her hand as she watched them.

“I’m more of an action person. I’ll let you academic types do the hard thinking,” she’d said with a chuckle.

“Are you calling us nerds?” Nick asked, with a look of mock offense. “Adrian, I think she just called us nerds.”

Adrian turned her thoughts back to the present, continuing to make her way toward the center of the labyrinth. She thought of Solon’s papyrus, the inscriptions on the shards, the petroglyph in the cave. As she reached the center of the labyrinth, she again thought of the word Atlantis itself in the pre-Greek language. Atai. She looked down at the center of the labyrinth, where she now stood. Home.

Gazing out at the glittering dark waters of the Bay of Malia, Adrian recalled a tidbit Elias had told her about peak sanctuaries, how they were built to be seen from other mountain peaks throughout Crete. She focused on a distant point on the horizon, to where the Greek isles lay to the north, and beyond that, continental Europe. She turned her body to face the east, where Turkey—then called Anatolia—lay.

She froze as a possible solution hit her. Could it really be that simple?

“I know that look, West,” Nick called over to her.

Adrian turned to face them. Nick was staring at her expectantly. Myia got to her feet, and Elias stepped out of his labyrinth to approach her.

“I think I know how we can find their original homeland,” she said. “How we can find Atlantis.”
