The Lengthening of the Days

The snow steadily melted away and the days lengthened. Because of persistent nightmares, Anna oft watched the sunrise in her room. Those mornings, she would reflect on everything that had happened and on everything she wanted to happen. At nights, she cuddled up with Bun-Bun and Bear and, whilst staring out at the city and the distant Northern Peaks, whispered to them how her day had gone.

Yet the profound desire for vengeance—justice, depending on her mood—never wavered, and if anything, only strengthened. That yearning covered not only Totillus the Turncoat Monk and The Reaper, but all those who oppressed the innocent.

The craving for freedom and adventure and escape also strengthened. Freedom from the grind of a daily life filled with studying. Escape from the city and the depressing street patrols. And adventure to experience life outside the monotonies of academy life. Above all, adventure to discover herself. If she were to bathe in isolation, she wanted it to be on her terms—out there, in the great wilds. A seed, having been planted long ago, began to germinate. If Anna’s plans came to pass, it would be ready for harvest by graduation’s end.

She thus spent part of every evening preparing plans, whether they be for a grand adventure in pursuit of the secret hidden in Devil’s Gate, studies of The Reaper and his conquests, academy-changing endeavors conducted by the student council, a secret attack on Totillus’s caravan, training and tutoring the heir to the kingdom, or concocting ever crazier ways of freeing those enslaved at Castle Arinthian.

Other than wild rumors, Totillus kept himself out of reach, and for the life of her, she could not think of a clever way to free the slaves without triggering the trap Lord Blackflower had set for her. Although she did not have the courage to see the ancestral castle for herself, she kept abreast of the goings on through word of mouth, reassured that at least the slaves were fed and warm and relatively safe. She also noted that Larval Haught threw many a party at the castle, oft inviting warlords of other kingdoms to sell weapons to, thus growing the Haught fortune at the expense of the wretched poor—and at the expense of the Arinthian name. She fantasized about showing up at one of those parties, throwing him out by the scruff, and freeing the enslaved.

Many evenings were spent training on how to handle the streets and combatting crime. And in the very late evenings, she practiced cycles, focused on her homework, and fiddled with the runic keystone and the accompanying ancient parchment she and Samantha had partially solved, making scant progress. She listened to Attendant Moore’s wise counsel, disciplined her mind with robust personal studies, and worked with Roth not only on honing her thesis spell, but illegally learning the complex 12th degree spell Tongues, which would allow her to communicate with people who spoke other languages—a crucial spell for her coming travels.

She spoke little in the halls and classes, and certainly did not mingle with or make friends.
