Chapter 16
âââ
Ellie said her goodbyes to Gavin at the crepe shop and drove herself back to her flat before she headed to Kateâs house. Her brain wouldnât shut up as she drove up past the Mitchell Library, the lights tracking on it at night made the already beautiful building absolutely stunning at night. Ellie always appreciated the building but tonight her mind was elsewhere. Gavin had repeatedly asked her to drop Stuart Henderson as a suspect but she couldnât. She knew logically that, with an alibi, they needed to focus elsewhere but she couldnât shake the almost overwhelming instinct within that this man was a murderer. She turned off Argyle Street onto the smaller roads that led to Kateâs flat. She pulled up in an available space just down from Kateâs, grabbed the food boxes and started walking down towards her building.
She passed a photographer taking pictures of the Victorian stairway on Clifton Street that is next to Kateâs road. The stairway was given listed status for historical interest and many art students, photographers and film makers had used the steps in their work due to their beauty and craftsmanship. Ellie loved Glasgow for its architecture, hundreds of little gems could be found all over the city if you went exploring.
She buzzed Kateâs bell and was greeted at the main door by a beautifully tousled Kate. She was in sweatpants, slippers and, of all things, and American football shirt. Her hair was all messy at the back and she looked like she had been in a deep sleep for some time. Ellie thought this was the most adorable thing she had ever seen.
âSorry I dozed off for a minute and then I looked and it was 4 hours later, here let me help with those boxesâ she led Ellie through into the house and sat the boxes down on the coffee table. Once the food was safe she turned back and wrapped her arms round Ellie in a warm hug and kissed her softly on the lips.
âWelcome back detective, I missed youâ she said with a lazy smile.
âI missed you too, what have you been up to today, I mean apart from the tiny nap obviouslyâ Ellie responded with a cheeky grin.
âYeah yeah itâs not like I have a 9-5 to get to you know. I set my own hours therefore a teeny little nap canât hurt. Apart from that I had the kids up at the park. I wrestled four different spiky sticks from Bruisers mouth, stopped Bella from trying to eat a squirrel, had to rescue both of them from a swan again and apologise to a woman with a loud kid because Bruiser thought he would join in with its yelling by howling beside him. He gave the kid such a fright it cried all the more. Once I did that I had a chat with Peggy and did a bit of writing then I ermâ¦.took my herbal pain relief and then passed out.â Kate didnât want
