Four days later…
“Can you keep a secret?” I asked my brother, Eric. “This is a big one though.”
He slid into the passenger seat of my pickup truck and looked over at me. “So was I right?”
For four days I tried to figure out the best way to tell my brother. We had a close relationship but sharing this secret could change the relationship Gracie and I were slowly building. “Right about what?”
“Grace is really Gracie Knight?”
I put the key in the ignition and dropped my hand onto my lap. “Eric, listen.”
He placed his hand on my forearm. “Hey man, I don’t really give a shit.”
“Well, that’s nice to say,” I teased.
“No, I don’t mean it that way.” He turned in his seat. “You seem happy. That’s great.”
“I am happy.”
“Then don’t let this silly family feud get in the way.”
I sighed and turned the key to start the engine. “Apparently her dad may go ballistic when he finds out.”
“Seriously? He’s never even talked to us.”
That was true, too. Breyer Farm was pissed the moment we stepped foot in town. If Appleton Farm was at the same event as them, we got a cold shoulder, dirty look, and good old fashioned silent treatment. I couldn’t remember a time where we talked to them.
“That’s true.” I turned the steering wheel and brought the truck out onto the main road. “She was nervous to tell me. I guess she thought our family hated them just as much her dad.”
“So how are you both planning to break the news to him?” Eric rolled down the window and leaned his arm on the windowsill. “You are going to tell him soon, right?”
“She wants to do the honors.” I glanced over at my brother. “That makes me look like a chicken shit doesn’t it?”
“No.” He didn’t elaborate on his answer. My brother was a pretty simple guy. If he didn’t care, I knew that meant he was fine with this new arrangement. “Hey, did you see Levi called and asked for some extra help down in North Carolina?”
“I did.” My family’s farm in Charlotte was huge compared to ours. “Think it’s okay to leave mom and dad high and dry during the busy season?”
“Dad seemed fine when we talked yesterday.”
“We did just hire a few extra hands.”
“Exactly. Plus, we all know Breyer farm gets most of the Halloween business.”
“We need to find a way to create a better corn maze.” I stopped at a light and looked over at Eric. “Zinger mentioned showing us how they created the maze, hayrides, and built up the business during the season.”
“We need to see it all in action,” Eric agreed. “That means you have to leave Gracie for over a month. Think you can handle that, Romeo?”
“Screw you.” I pulled into the driveway of our destination. “Work comes first. It always has.”
He hopped out of the truck. “You say that now. We’ll see in two weeks when we have to leave.”
My relationship with Gracie was so new. We were still finding our way with each other.
