PRIVATE DIARY OF C. F., APRIL 28, 1825

WRITTEN IN AN INVENTED SHORTHAND

Christ, that letter. Isabelle let me put an arm around her in the coach, but she’s been distant ever since. We’re in Valence for the night. She claimed to be tired (believable) and is lying in bed pretending to sleep (not believable).

I want to hug her so much that it’s become a physical ailment.
