Chapter 12 - Ryder

After my fight with Aria, I spent the next few days not trying to approach her at all. When she returned from work, I always had dinner ready for her, but I didn’t sit with her when she ate. I avoided her presence and gave her space.

Truth be told, I had no idea how to speak to her anymore.

I thought that once I had confessed my feelings to her, she would accept my proposal to start over again. I had been under the delusion that she would simply fall into my arms, and all would be well. We were talking about Aria, though—a woman far too cool and stubborn to simply admit she wanted me.

Or maybe she really didn’t care for me like I had always longed for her.

Not knowing what to do with all my nervous energy, I threw myself into my Alpha duties. I mercilessly went through paperwork, approving many projects and declining others.

At some point, I had to mediate between two arguing parties, even though it wasn’t time for an official hearing yet. I listened to one woman belittling another, but my heart just wasn’t invested in their situation. Oliver stepped in then and helped me reach a solution. He had the right to do so as the Beta, and I appreciated him joining the conversation.

After the hearing, I went to my office, and Oliver followed me. When I saw him standing in my doorway, I asked, “Is there something you need?”

I didn’t feel like interacting with others right now. I was too much of a mess inside.

Aria had told me that she had only approached me with the intention of hurting me. I had replied that she had succeeded—and it was true. My heart ached each time I thought about her now. My thoughts were in disarray.

“You need to talk to someone,” Oliver gave me a compassionate look. “I’m here for you, Ryder.”

I sighed, rubbing my temples. “I don’t want to talk.”

“You may not want to,” he said, “but you sure need to.”

I glared at him, but Oliver only returned my stubborn gaze with a kind expression.

Finally, I gave in. “Come in.” I gestured inside the office.

Oliver sat down opposite me. “Trouble with Aria?”

“Yes,” I said. “I… I confessed to her. Told her why I had rejected her. I thought that would fix everything between us.”

“But it didn’t?” He asked.

I shook my head. “Not at all. She said she hates me and doesn’t want me in her life. She only approached me again to hurt me, to get back at me.”

Oliver whistled. “Now that’s quite the mess.”

“It is,” I nodded. “But I can’t give up on her—not now after I finally realized that I never stopped loving her. How do I change her attitude towards me?”

Oliver looked thoughtful.

When he said nothing, I continued speaking. “I’ve done so many bad things against her—I rejected her, I exiled her parents. How does someone repair a relationship when it’s that broken? Is fixing things between us
