Chapter 36

Leila POV

“Smooth,” Ethan says sarcastically, putting his face in his hands and shaking his head as Cooper fills us in on how he introduced Hayley to Alpha Reynolds as just a colleague.

“Just shut up,” Cooper snaps, looking as though he is about to destroy everything that isn’t nailed down if Ethan riles him up anymore. Not that there’s much left untouched as it is.

“Leila, will you just answer your fucking phone?” Cooper growls loudly as the buzzing of my phone fills the air again. I am about to send it to voicemail before I see Marcus’s name flashing up on the screen.

“Marcus?” I answer cautiously. I didn’t even know he had my phone number.

“Leila, finally! Why aren’t you answering your phone?” he barks down the line.

“Well, hello to you too,” I snap back. The brief glimmer of excitement I felt at seeing that the big, growly object of my desire was calling me has been quickly extinguished by his rudeness. Fate has a twisted sense of humour, pairing me with a man who doesn’t want anything to do with me.

“Is Hayley there? Or Cooper? I can’t get in touch with either of them,” he asks, and I’m instantly paying attention. He is all business and I know something must be going on.

“What’s wrong Marcus? Cooper is here, but Hayley left a couple of hours ago,” I ask.

“Fuck!” he says, “Where is she? Is anyone with her?” The urgency in his voice comes through loud and clear despite the traffic noise and siren blaring in the background.

“No, I don’t think so. Rex dropped her home earlier, but he didn’t hang around.”

Cooper is standing right beside me now after hearing his mate’s name and picks up on the nervous tone in Marcus’s voice. I put the call on speaker and place it on the desk so everyone can hear.

“Marcus, it’s Cooper here. What’s going on? Why are you looking for Hayley?” he asks, all serious Alpha now as he leans over my phone and runs a tanned hand through his already dishevelled-looking dark brown hair. His dominant aura is building as he gets tenser and it’s suddenly stifling in the room. Ethan moves to his side and places a hand on his shoulder, his best friend ready to stand by him, just waiting to see what needs to be done.

“Coop. Hayley’s neighbour, old Jack Miller, called to say he heard some shouting, and what sounded like a gunshot, over at Hayley’s place. But we’ve been out at a massive pile-up on the interstate. I’m on my way back now but it’ll take me at least 15 or 20 minutes.” He growls and curses, blaring the horn of the squad car as he races back through traffic.

“There’s nobody else who can get there any sooner. You need to go, and I mean right now,” he says forcefully, and I see the colour drain from Cooper’s face as he takes in what Marcus is saying, that his mate is in danger.

“Ethan, mindlink Rex and find out where he is.
