Chapter 15

Much to my wolf’s disappointment, we didn’t go for the run I’d promised. I knew I couldn’t hide in my apartment forever, but that didn’t stop me from trying.

I was sitting in the living room, mindlessly watching a rerun of a popular sitcom from the nineties when I heard the exterior door open. I held my breath, hoping the sound was a trick of my imagination, but then three knocks rapped against the front door.

I contemplated pretending I wasn’t home, but immediately dismissed the idea. Any shifter worth their salt would be able to hear me inside the apartment. I seriously needed to ask Kayla to teach me how to construct a silencing barrier.

Reluctantly, I opened the door. Axel stood on the other side. I told myself I wasn’t disappointed.

“Good evening, Blair.”

“Good evening.” I took in his sleek button-down and dark gray slacks. “You look nice.”

“Thank you.” He smiled. “I was on my way to dinner with Kayla and Asher when Kayla suggested you join us. I thought it was a wonderful idea. So, here I am, inviting you to dinner.”

The blood drained from my face. Dinner with Axel and Asher? That spelled disaster.

“Oh, uh… I’m not sure I should. You three probably have a lot to catch up on.”

“We do, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be included. After all, you’ll be family soon enough.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat and desperately tried to come up with a plausible excuse for why I couldn’t join, but my mind went blank.

Taking my silence as acceptance, Axel said, “Ash and Kayla are already on their way to Miko’s to get a table, but we have time if you want to change. Not that you need to. You look great.”

I looked down at my leggings and rumpled, oversized shirt and chuckled. “I appreciate that, but we both know I’ll stick out like a sore thumb if I wear this to Miko’s.”

“You’d stand out no matter what you wear.”

My eyes flew up.

Axel’s cheeks reddened. “I mean, you’re new to our pack. So, naturally, you stand out.”

I pressed my lips together and nodded. “Right. Give me a minute. I won’t be long.”

I hurried into the bedroom. Once I closed the door behind me, I leaned against it and closed my eyes, trying to calm myself.

Unless I was mistaken, Axel just admitted he found me attractive.

Normally, such a thing wouldn’t affect me so much, but every fiber of my being absolutely recoiled from the thought of any male admiring me—any male, except Asher.

I bit the inside of my cheek to hold back my frustrated scream.

I am so screwed.
