Some types are safe for surfaces that come into contact with food. Tung oil is highly resistant to water and mildew, and it dries fast. However, it is harder to get good results with pure tung oil than with the many modern penetrating oils that mix tung with various additives to give a much more predictable product. Similarly, linseed oil, squeezed from flax seeds, is the prime ingredient in some of the more popular blends but can also be found pure. It should be “boiled” rather than “raw.” Raw linseed oil takes months to dry or may not completely dry at all.
