Chapter Twelve

A month after the mission, Cal was sitting at the foot of his bunk shining his boots for an inspection scheduled to take place the next day. He suddenly heard, “ATTENTION!! SENIOR OFFICER ON DECK!!” Every warrior in the barracks jumped to attention as Captain Hall saluted a young woman wearing a full Admiral’s uniform. The woman returned Hall’s salute and said, “AS YOU WERE!” The warriors relaxed and many of them walked to the front of the barracks to see what was going on. Cal remained at his bunk polishing his boots. He hoped the Admiral wasn’t here to take him to a court Marshall.

The woman looked around and said, “I’m Admiral Story and I’ve come here to deliver a message from Senior Commander Story.” Love saw all the warriors staring at her and she smiled, “Yes, I am related to Commander Story; I’m his daughter. He sent me here to tell you that your mission was a great success and we found what we needed to increase the power of our reactors. Out of this success, our newest warships are going to be capable of standing up and going toe-to-toe with the Sed and alien warships that threaten us. Senior Commander Story congratulates you and your unit has been recommended for a unit citation for your accomplishment. It’s due to your bravery and professionalism that we have a better chance of survival against those who threaten us. Congratulations!” The warriors cheered and when they finished shouting, Love turned to Captain Hall, “Is there a Private Calloway present?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Please ask him to come with me outside for a private conversation.” Love turned and walked out of the barracks.

“CALLOWAY, GET UP HERE!” Cal put his boots under his bunk, stood up, and walked to the front of the barracks. “The Admiral wishes to speak with you.”

Cal nodded and walked out of the entrance expecting the worse. He looked around and saw the Admiral sitting on a bench next to the sidewalk leading to the barracks. He walked over and went to attention. Love smiled and patted the bench next to her, “Relax Cal; please, sit down.” Cal’s eyes narrowed and Love chuckled, “Will you relax! I’m bringing good news; you don’t have anything to worry about.” Cal sat down and Love said, “You will not be court martialed for disobeying orders on the mission.”

Cal huffed out a breath and replied, “That is good news. Why have the charges been dropped?”

“There’s two reasons.”

“And they are?” Cal inquired.

“The first reason is the mission was successful and you played the biggest role in its success.”

“How is that?”

“The two fuel cells you brought in with you are the ones that held the fuel we needed to break the code on how to duplicate the Sed fuel. Without those two fuel cells, the mission would have been a bust.”

Cal shook his head, “You’re giving me credit for something I don’t deserve. It was the scientist that forced my hand in bringing them back to the carrier.
