The nine smiling doll faces peppered throughout the patio are only a few of the Easter eggs concealed within the Alcázar. One should also be on the lookout for the golden peacocks camouflaged in the foliage swirls above the triple arch in the Ceiling Room of Philip II. Those able to discover all the Easter eggs unaided, say local mystics, are either blessed with child or good fortune.

Later Castilian kings also renamed the Puerta de la Montería the “Puerta del Leon.” The puerta, or the “Lion's Gate” – which leads to the Patio del Leon, a protruding segment wedged between the Sala de la Justica and the Cuarto del Almirante (Admiral's Room) – is essentially the main entrance to the entire fortress. A black arch door was installed in the center of the crimson gate. Above the door is a tile panel – a José Gestoso original – showcasing a crowned heraldic lion with a lolling tongue, wielding a golden cross with one claw, and stomping upon what appears to be the pole of a blue flag with the other. A white sash draped around the lion, bearing the Gothic script, “Ad Utrumque,” or “Prepared for All,” completes the picture. The Triana tiles used in this piece were sourced from the Sevillean ceramics factory of José Mensaque y Vera.
