TWENTY-SIX
They got back in the Caddy, buckled up and headed north towards the cabin on the twisting blacktop that led further into the mountains. Carlson was behind the wheel; his considerable belly barely fit behind the steering column. Although the seat was back as far as it would go, every time he made a turn, Carlson had to suck in his gut a little.
âHow much longer?â Scott asked.
âAbout an hour, maybe less. Why? Are you getting bored with the drive?â
âNot so much bored with the drive as bored with the company,â Scott said, giving Carlson a deplorable look.
Ben was silent. He wasn't sure how to respond. Was he just kidding around, or did the boy despise him like he despised everyone else?
After a couple of miles in which neither spoke, Scott finally said, âOnce we get to this meeting place, what are we going to do? What are your plans?â
âNot my plans, but the plans of the projects creator. First, we will work on control of your power so you can use it at will and the outcome will be exactly as planned. No mistakes. And what better place to work on and perfect your gift than Mother Nature herself? Up here there aren't the distractions - or obstacles - we would encounter in the city or other populated areas. Up here we only have to contend with the few people on the staff of the Corporation and any wildlife that might happen to wander across our path. Casualties will be few, if any. Once we are ready, we will find the girl, and you can do what you need to do, but you must kill her when you're finished.â
âOf course.â
âAnd then, well ⦠it is up to the director. My goal, since youâve asked, is to prove to the Federal Government and the general public that we are capable of eradicating disease and ending war. And for that, my dear boy, they will have to pay.â
âSo youâre in this for the money? Youâre inââ
âNow wait just a minute. I know that you have powers beyond even what I can comprehend but remember one thing: I created you. Without the Larenx Corporation - and me - you wouldn't even exist. And just because you can move inanimate objects without use of your physical body, read someone's thoughts, and even kill, you need to know something. Other people on this planet, gifted people, can read minds too. They can move objects. And any of us can kill or be killed. You read about that every day in the newspaper or hear it on the news. None of that makes you unique. What makes you â us â special, Scott, is that we are going to do things that haven't been done, or even attempted, ever before.â
âWow, you make it all sound so exciting, I can hardly wait,â Scott said sarcastically, rubbing his hands together excitedly in mock anticipation.
Ben wanted to slap the boy. He clenched his jaws hard and sucked in a deep breath, trying to contain his anger.
