Helping Others to Stay Sober

How can we help others if we can barely help ourselves? Helping others will actually help ourselves to stay sober. We should always make sure that we are in a good place in our own recovery before attempting to help others. Helping another person is a rewarding feeling that will help us stay sober and on the right path. AA principles are built on sharing with another addict but the other person has to really want recovery, you can’t rush someone because you could turn them against the process if you’re overzealous. Let them ask about Recovery and be ready to share your own story, they should see the similarities between the both of you and then hopefully they may eventually open up to the thought of sobering up. One of the best things is watching the ‘change’ happen in another addict, when they finally and totally accept recovery and are willing to go to any lengths to keep sober. I can look back at my past mistakes and wonder WTF was I thinking? I almost ruined a chance at a great life. I was blinded to the damage that I was inflicting on myself and others. Addiction played me like a first class chump and I can accept that I lost badly. When we start to understand addiction and how cunning and diabolical it can be, we can start planning a solid recovery foundation. Addiction doesn’t want to lose its foothold so don’t think it will quietly fade to the background. It will always be there, waiting, plotting. Believe in yourself and believe that you can stay sober, that is what changes the game back to your favor.

Addiction only wins when we surrender completely! Do not let it win, NEVER GIVE UP!! This is YOUR LIFE!! The hardest step to recovery is the very 1st step. We were blinded by our addiction to the extent of our rapidly decaying life. Now we know what addiction wants from us so what are YOU going to do about that? Today I will do the work that my recovery needs. Our recovery should always be in our thoughts, do not think that you are good after a few months sobriety. It doesn’t work like that. That is exactly what our addiction wants us to do. Never underestimate the power of addiction, it will always be there plotting another relapse, it probably has already picked a time & place, it can be weeks or months from now. It only takes a moment of insanity for relapse to strike down the strongest of us. Remember that. It takes only a few minutes to erase all the beautiful things that your recovery made possible.

Recovery is not easy. There are day's when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Your sobriety will be tested early and often. Keep believing that things will get better because I am here to testify that it does! The longer your able
