Chapter Twenty-Six

I wonder whether Eve has ever been diagnosed as a psychopath. There is a diagnostic tool to evaluate whether someone is a psychopath or not. It’s called the Hare Psychopathy Checklist. Essentially, you score a person’s attributes, like whether they exhibit delusions of grandeur (check), whether they lack any remorse or guilt (check), if they are pathological liars (probably check).

So maybe she had been seeing a shrink, and the shrink had assessed her using the Hare checklist, and the results are in her house somewhere.

Okay, long shot. Also, I don’t think psychopaths voluntarily submit themselves to the Hare checklist. I think that happens if they’ve been arrested for some horrible crime. But maybe there’s the name of a psychologist lying around. A bill, a business card, something I can use to find out more about her. Maybe she’s been locked up in the past, she’s crazy enough for it. That’s the kind of thing I could use. Then even if she went to the cops I could point to her unreliability as a witness.

She’s crazy, but you don’t have to take my word for it, officer; it’s well documented. By the way, she was the one driving the car that night.

I wasn’t going to go to her stupid party. I’d rather get my teeth pulled out. But then I remembered the dream, and I thought, when will I get such an opportunity again to snoop? So when Hilary called to say she was taking Paige to the movies over at the Apple Cinema and would Abi and I like to join them, I asked her to take Abi instead.

“I’ll make it up to you, I swear.” I could tell she wasn’t happy about it. I didn’t remind her of all the times I ran errands for her, or took the girls somewhere because she was going out with Henry. There are other things I’ve done for her, but I can’t remember them.

“I suppose it’s your incredibly important work again, is it? Tell me Katherine, this business about having it all, a career, a child, a home, how is it working out for you?”

It’s a nasty barb, even for Hilary, and it makes me gasp. I don’t know what’s gotten into her. She mumbles something I don’t catch.

“What did you say?” I ask, coldly.

“I said I’ll do it.”

I want to tell her to get lost. But I can’t. I need her, and that’s the truth.

When I tell Abi she’s going out with Paige and Hilary, but not me, she raises her eyes under her eyelids. I catch a glint of reflected light at her throat.

“That’s pretty.” I sit on the bed and reach to finger the necklace, a simple gold chain with a multicolored round glass pendant. She wraps her hand around it, but her cheeks turn pink and she won’t look at me. Oh, I see, that’s really sweet. I think maybe Abigail has a boyfriend.

“Hilary says you can stay over there tonight,” I tell her, hoping to diffuse the tension.
