BEFORE CONSUMMATION

Kautilya says: ‘The frustration of a woman’s fertile period is a violation of a sacred duty.’ {3.4.36}

Therefore, a wife who is still a virgin shall be free to remarry as she wishes after she has waited for the prescribed period and with the approval of the judges.

[The waiting period shall depend on whether the husband informed his wife before his departure, whether the wife received news of her husband during his absence, and whether he had paid the full dowry.]

The prescribed periods shall apply [only] to the first four kinds of marriage.
