They spent the rest of that night in the city, stopping at jazz bars to dance, and moving to a sushi restaurant when they were too dizzy to stand. They laughed and swapped stories, making fun of the American tourists who stumbled in and out of trinket shops in Shinjuku, then caught a movie at a local theater. The movie was in Japanese, and Wolfgang didn’t understand a word of it, but they only made it halfway through before being kicked out for disturbing the audience.

Wolfgang wasn’t sure why. He was certain he was a quiet kisser.

By midnight they were tired enough to give up the wild tour of the city, so they found a local hotel with a view of the skyline and made love in a darkened room. Wolfgang lost himself in the softness of Megan’s skin and the gentle whispers of her voice as they tangled beneath the blankets, alone in the world and uncaring for whatever the next day would bring. He intertwined his fingers with hers as they kissed, and the moments turned into over an hour before they both lay naked on sweaty sheets, her head on his shoulder.

Megan breathed softly and rubbed a thumb against his palm. He nestled his nose closer to her hair and breathed her in, feeling peace for the first time in a long time.

“Why are you this way?” Megan whispered.

“What way?”

“Why do you care so much about being good to the world?”

Wolfgang swallowed, the perfectness of the moment tarnished by the uncorking of old memories.

“I’m not what you think, Megan. I’ve not always been good to the world.”

Megan let out a long, slow breath. She pulled his hand close to her mouth and kissed his fingertips. “Isn’t that true of everyone?”

“Megan . . . ”

“Shh,” she whispered. “Let’s not be who we were, Wolfgang. Let’s just be here. Let’s just be now.”

He pulled her closer and buried his nose in her hair. It was a good offer, yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that as perfect as the moment was, it was temporary. The world was a cruel place full of cruel people who smothered joy, leaving it in bloody wreckage. If he didn’t protect this, what would they become?

“Would you ever leave SPIRE?” Wolfgang asked.

Megan didn’t seem surprised by the question. She traced his palm with her fingertips. “Maybe. I mean, I’ve thought about it.”

“Why do you stay?”

“For Kevin. He’s in a dark place. I think he bears a lot of survivor’s guilt for what happened in Afghanistan. The military won’t let him fight evil anymore, so . . . he fights it with SPIRE.”

“You’re here to look after him?”

“Yeah. We don’t have any family left. I think if I left Kevin alone, he’d probably self-destruct. And, I mean, I’m good at this job. I was an FBI agent for three years before Kevin called and told me about this new company he’d heard about. I looked into them and tried to talk him out of it. I knew it would be dangerous.
