Chapter 11

Zeke came slowly to consciousness with the distinct impression he was somewhere unfamiliar. For a start, the bed he was lying on was far too soft to be his bedroll at his campsite.

Cautiously, he opened his eyes, and it soon became apparent he was not at his campsite.

He was in Morgan West’s pretty little bedroom. In Morgan West’s pretty little bed, with Morgan West’s pretty white sheets tangled around him. A pink velvet pillow was wedged beneath his head while he had his arm wrapped around a silky blue one.

Of Morgan West herself, there was no sign.

He lay there for a second, trying to pull himself together, and then he noticed the time displayed on the pretty white-and-gold clock on Morgan’s nightstand.

Nine in the morning.

Holy shit. He’d slept in. And he never slept in.

Pulling away the white sheet from around him, he got out of bed and hunted for his clothes. Eventually he found them on the white armchair near the window, folded neatly and smelling of laundry liquid instead of woodsmoke and sweat.

Morgan had apparently washed and dried them.

There was a strange ache in the middle of his chest, an ache he didn’t know what to do with, though his body felt loose and relaxed, like it did after a really good sleep.

Except he hadn’t had a really good sleep. What he’d had was lots of sex interspersed with a few hours of shut-eye here and there.

Heat wound through him, memories of the night before replaying themselves in vivid Technicolor in his head. Of Morgan’s silky, curvy little body pressed to his, of her eyes dark in the night, full of wonder and pleasure. Of her voice in his ear, calling his name huskily and softly, and her hands on him, discovering him, tracing him as if he was something amazing and precious. She’d been so needy and desperate for him, the complete opposite of her stern no-nonsense exterior, and he’d loved it.

He’d never experienced anything quite like it. Sex had always been more of a physical release than anything else, but that…

Yeah, best not think about that too hard.

Probably a good idea. Besides, she’d only wanted a night, that’s what she’d said, and so that’s what he’d given her. Now it was over. Done.

And it was good she wasn’t here—yes, very good. Then he wouldn’t be tempted to pull her back into bed for more of the same.

Ignoring the ache in his chest, he picked up the clothes and headed toward the shower. He didn’t mind his cold dips in the river, but if there was hot water going, he might as well take advantage of it.

Ten minutes later, showered and dressed, he went downstairs.

There was no sign of Morgan anywhere, and he told himself he wasn’t disappointed. The delicious smell of bacon was coming from the kitchen, so he followed that instead, coming in to find a note sitting on the kitchen table.

I’ve gone to work, but breakfast is in the oven. Thank you for last night.
