Chapter 17

Bill and Grant smiled down at their wives, but their faces clouded over when they saw Abigail in tears. Bill hopped down and pecked Grace on the cheek. “Let me guess. You’ve been talking to Florence again.”

Grace nodded. “Both of us have, and we’ve both decided that we’ve had enough. We aren’t talking to her anymore, and we won’t go visit her anymore, either. When she’s been alone for a few weeks, she can decide whether she wants to keep being such a plague on everybody’s lives.”

Grant turned to Abigail. “And what about your piano lessons? Are you going to drop them, too? I thought you said that you give them to her in place of rent.”

“I do,” she replied. “But I guess we can make other arrangements. We can always leave here and go live somewhere else.”

“That’s what we’re going to do,” Grace added. “Bill, I’m ready to leave. Let’s get out of here and go somewhere we can put our hard work to good use.”

Bill laughed and caught her in his arms and kissed her. “I thought you’d never get around to saying that. You’ve put up with more than enough from Florence. But we can’t leave now.”

Both women jumped and gasped. “What? What do you mean?”

He laughed again, but Grant smiled, but only half-heartedly. “We spotted those varmints out west near the mustangs. Grant deputized me, and I’m going to stick around until we bring ‘em in.”

Grace frowned. “Do you really have to do that?”

“No, I don’t,” Bill declared. “I gave my word to help Grant, and I’m going to do it. One man can’t bring ‘em in by himself, and we can get up closer to ‘em with two of us rounding up the mustangs. I’m sorry, darlin’. I’m staying ‘til this job is done.”

Grace’s head drooped. “I guess there’s nothing more to say about it.”

“What about this?” Bill suggested. “Let’s find another place to stay until it’s time to leave. You don’t have to stay under the same roof as that....that witch.”

“What about the cottage?” Abigail offered.

Grant started in surprise. Bill glanced at him, and then back at Grace. “No, not the cottage. You two just got married, and we couldn’t impose on you. I was thinking more of.....well, I wasn’t sure what I was thinking. But we definitely can’t stay in the cottage. That is definitely out. We’ll think of something else.”

“We can stay in the house,” Grace decided. “As long as I don’t have to talk to her, I can wait until you bring the mustangs and the varmints in.” She snickered to Abigail. “Isn’t that a silly word? Varmints!”

“Are you sure you can stand to stay in the house that long?” Bill asked. “It could be awhile before we finish the job.”

“That’s all right,” Grace replied. “I can keep the house and help Kathy the way I always do, and I’ll be ready when you finish.”

Grant faced Abigail again. “What about you? Can you stand to stay here a little while longer until we finish this job?”

Abigail nodded, and when she looked into his eyes, she smiled.
