Chapter Fifteen
Days earlier
Giaâs decision to escape that night might end in her death, but the alternative was a death not of her choosing. Through her barred window, a burst of clouds filled the night sky. Exhilaration filled her. She could taste freedom. But if she made it out alive, where would she go?
A memory cleared the fog bank. The sweltering sauna, the reoccurring nightmare, a flash of a blurred-out face, the image grew clearer, until...
Ben De Young sprang up on the other side of the window, their eyes locking. She hurtled backward and landed on the bed, blinking over and over until poof, he vanished. The room constricted into a black speck, and she allowed her body to sink into the mattress. Just a hallucination.
Her brainâs floodgate opened, churning up the memories of the abuse he had inflicted upon her. Skyla...oh my God, Skyla! Had Ben assaulted her, too? The one person sheâd lay down her life for? Her stomach heaved.
Focus on escape. Deal with him later.
The clock read 7:51. The nurse, whoâd recovered from her concussion way too quickly, had never been late for her rounds. Right now, sheâd be arranging the evil medical cart with blood-testing suppliesâsomething she administered every two hours, on the hour, from eight in the morning until eight at night. For what purpose? In nine minutes, sheâd barge in and whip out her rubber tourniquet.
Hobbling to the bathroom, the camera trailed her. Patient in room 122 is heading in to take a crap. After shutting herself inside, she retrieved the needle from under the sink. How could the dumb bitch not remember leaving it on the cart?
Gia knelt before the toilet, the needle practically salivating in the palm of her hand. With her free hand, she crammed a finger down her throat and rhythmically probed, her body writhing until the vomit came. She flinched when the nurse barged in. Wearily lifting her head, she begged, âYou gotta give me something. Please, Iâm sick.â The dollop of puke on her chin was a nice touch.
âGet in bed,â the nurse ordered impatiently. âI need your vitals and blood.â
Head hanging inside the bowl, she heaved for effect. âI canât get up. Please...â
âFine, then. Iâll do it here.â She rolled in the cart. âHold out your damn arm so I can get in there.â
Giaâs eyes narrowed as the nurse grabbed her left wrist. In one swift motion, Gia plunged the needle into her neck, then savored the sight with twisted satisfaction as the nurseâs body fell into full body paralysis.
