Chapter 9

TODD DIDN’T particularly want Nick to take on Benning, and he knew from the look on Nick’s face his silent order to stop had been seen. Seen and ignored. Damn pigheaded kid. Todd was going to have serious words with Nick and possibly kick his ass for what he was about to try. Those feelings warred with and lost to the pride and relief Todd felt.

The only course open to Todd at this point was to help his young mate—and live so Todd could dole out that ass kicking.

Shouting those two words at Benning caused him to put his back completely to the door and face Todd. Nick moved fast, but they both knew there was no way Nick would be fast enough to complete a circle with the oil around Benning. Todd reasoned it was the only plan Nick could think of; it was certainly the only one that came to Todd’s mind.

The only glitch in that plan was it wasn’t going to work.

“You’re not really in a position to sling insults,” Benning said. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked down at Todd, an expression of annoyance on his face.

Todd snorted. “There’s never a bad time for insults.” He eased himself farther up the wall. “You’re going to kill me.”

Nick slipped through the door, crouched low, and began sprinkling drops of oil as close to Benning as Todd knew he dared get.

“That’s not really a question since you know the answer,” Benning replied.

“Just making sure we’re on the same page. Why haven’t you already?” Todd wanted more than anything to let his gaze slide to Nick and watch his progress like a hawk. Doing that would be a certain tip-off to Nick’s position, though. So Todd concentrated on keeping his focus on Benning.

Benning studied Todd for a few seconds. “Neither you nor your slave is what you appear to be, so I want to make sure I have you both. Despite how he looks on the outside, I think he’s just as dangerous as you.”

Todd had to clamp his lips shut to keep from telling Benning he had no idea how dangerous Nick was but would find out shortly.

Nick had dripped oil in a half circle behind Benning. Going any farther would put him in Benning’s line of sight. Todd wasn’t sure if he should be horrified or hopeful when Nick pulled out matches and struck one.

At the sound of the head of the match scratching over flint, Benning narrowed his eyes and straightened his spine while he glared at Todd. His eyes glazed over, turning completely fire red, and he blew out a harsh, angry, inhuman noise.

It was clear to Todd that Benning was aware someone was behind him. From his reaction, Todd reasoned Benning knew who that someone was. Todd held one arm close to his body, trying to ease the pain from a damaged rib or two, and got his feet under him. He used the wall for added brace and balance and began slowly pushing his weight off the floor.
