“That’s what you get.”

He rolled away to take care of the condom, then helped her stand. “I’ve wanted to do that for years.”

“So have I. Not necessarily here, like this, but similar versions.”

“No regrets?” He hiked his jeans back over his hips but left his shirt untucked.

Now that she didn’t have the heat of his body against hers and the adrenaline running through her system, the barn seemed even colder. If it wasn’t for the heat that rushed to her cheeks, she might have shivered. She re-dressed with shaky hands. “Not yet. Maybe later.”

“Why?”

Looking into his eyes, she almost forgot her reasons, but a glance around the barn reminded her. She was selling. He was buying. And then she’d leave. She’d never slept with a man without at least the promise of a future together. She wasn’t sure she was emotionally equipped for the clean break her departure would require. “Nothing can come of this.”

He pushed her back against the wall, his forehead against hers. “Not even round two in my bed?”

Tessa knew her eyes were as wide as saucers. She waited for regret to kick in, but all she felt was the rush of excitement. “But then what?”

“Doesn’t matter to me. Round three can be wherever you want.” He winked.

“But—”

He interrupted her with one long finger against her lips. “It’s okay. We’re two rational adults. This should have happened long ago. Think of this as closure.”

That made a lot of sense. She pulled her lip between her teeth. She buckled her belt and tried to remember why she shouldn’t follow him to his bedroom. What was the harm in enjoying him while he was here? Could she partake of the physical pleasure he promised without endangering her heart?

Closure. Yeah. In his big bed.

She smiled, but before she could agree to anything, a diesel truck pulled into the drive.

“That was close.” Josh winked, then gave his zipper a final check.
