CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

August 7, 2036, Southern Tucson Unified Police Station 12, Tucson, New Baja Republic

Trev summarized the Phoenix mission for Detective Connell. He sat beside Cassie in front of the detective. Darius waited outside with the office door closed. The former soldier hadn’t complained on the way over.

That had impressed Trev. Not everybody was comfortable with lie detector powers. They didn’t even need to have a dark secret to hide. People liked their privacy, and Darius’ lack of concern was a good sign.

“Nobody we know can tell us why everyone’s so interested in this Natalie Sanko, though,” Trev continued. “That was why we called you to ask you to check into it. We want to take down bounties, but we don’t want to piss off the local PD or end up making the situation worse.”

Connell grunted. “I’ve heard a little about the situation up there. I’m also smart enough not to stick my nose into another city’s business. Lord knows I have enough to keep me busy down here.”

“You don’t have anything to share, then?” Cassie sounded disappointed.

“I didn’t say that,” Connell replied. “I talked to a couple of buddies off the record and non-official. That’s as much as I dare unless you give me a reason to push harder. That could cause a mess if you’re right about someone or something trying to keep the Phoenix PD out of the Sanko mess.”

Trev shook his head. “It’s fine. We just need enough information to get started. When we’re up there, we can play it by ear. If all that happens is we take down a few bounties, it’ll be worth it. If it’s more, we’ll be the lightning rod.”

“I honestly don’t know what’s going on up there,” Connell sounded irritated. “I’m not sure the Phoenix or Tempe departments have a clue either, and they have the most interest in the case. Luke Carrington died in Phoenix and worked in Tempe.”

“Nothing suggested he was dirty?” Cassie asked.

Connell shook his head. “He was so squeaky clean that I’m a criminal compared to him. Same thing with the Sanko girl. Everything I’ve heard says neither had a connection to anything illegal until this current nonsense.”

“Anything suspicious about his death?” Trev pressed.

“They say the wreck was terrible. Something to do with a battery fire and chemicals the truck he hit was carrying. There wasn’t much left.”

Cassie frowned. “They confirmed that he’s dead?”

“They did. There wasn’t much left, but there was enough.” Connell’s nostrils flared. “It’s not one of those deals where they only had a hand or a foot and the rest of him was conveniently gone, only for him to pop up later.”

Trev stared at him. “Have you run into that?”

“Oh, yes. I dealt with a powerful regenerator not long after the Change, and that’s not all. You’d be surprised by what I’ve seen criminals do to escape from the cops and the military. Brave new world, and we’re all living in it.”

“I’m curious about Sanko and the local cops,” Cassie interjected. “They have to know that she’s being hunted.
