Chapter 10

The following two days passed, and I didn’t see either Henry or Jace. If I’m honest with myself, it was a relief. It felt good to be on a simple routine of working. After closing, I walked to the main street and found a new place to stop for dinner. There was a fish and chips restaurant one night, a steakhouse the next. I wanted to be normal and live a normal, boring life. Whenever drama got involved, I felt like I wanted to shut down. Life wasn’t reality TV. There were no viewers. I saw and felt it all. Alone.

I enjoyed walking amidst the locals as I slowly learned my way around. I kept to the main streets and never stayed out too late. On an impulse, I stopped by that shop I’d seen when I went out with Henry and Jace that first time and bought the boots that had caught my eye. Hopefully, they’ll keep my toes warm in this frigid air. As I walked out of the store with them on, my shoes in the box under my arm, the boots felt like butter and were insanely comfortable.

I’m sure I paid too much, but a girl’s gotta treat herself now and then, right?

Thursday morning, I woke up as usual and went through my routine on autopilot. I only thought of Henry once. My heart ached as I longed to see him. I acknowledged the pain and let myself feel it before taking a deep breath and continued getting dressed. I wanted to continue exploring his body, his mind. There was so much there and right within reach.

He’s probably half-way across the globe now.

With my thermos in hand, I tread down the stairs and start my day of work. Everything goes off per usual. I made a sale to a sweet elderly couple interested in the abstract pieces in the front room. They were sweet and hungry for good art. After they left, I fantasized about still being that interested in the world after all those years. I feared one day the tangible fact of my mortality would make me complicit in my existence, and there would be nothing I could do about it.

Preparing for the end of the day, I got the floor ready for the new paintings coming in the morning. I cleared out space in the backroom, prepared the frames, and reset the storage space for the night. It was thirty minutes until I closed up shop when the bell on the door alerted me to someone. As I walked into the front room, I saw Henry. He stood in the center with both hands in his jean pockets. His riding jacket was on as he faced away from me, staring at one of the paintings.

I didn’t think I’d see him again.

I stood for a moment as I tried to figure out what I should say.

“Henry.” I almost whispered his name, but he heard me.

His shoulders raised slowly as he took a breath before turning toward me.
