Chapter Seventeen

Rachel was not above admitting it to herself when she was wrong. And she’d been wrong about Blake. She wasn’t in love or anything, but she was definitely a little bit smitten with the sweet man and his dazzling smile. Between her jobs and Oscar and Blake’s unorthodox schedule, they usually only saw each other in the middle of the night, just long enough for pancakes and a rendezvous between his sheets after she got off work, but Rachel found she liked their arrangement.

Their time together was like a special secret that the darkness helped them hide from the rest of the universe. It was out of time, void of consequence, but with all the benefits of having a devoted and thorough lover. Exploring her attraction to this new man during their stolen moments allowed Rachel time to adjust to this new reality where she was allowed to feel.

For so long, Rachel had only allowed herself to be a mourning wife, to be Oscar’s mom, to be Naomi’s friend, to be responsible and hardworking. Since Gabe had died, Rachel hadn’t given much thought to what it was that she needed or wanted for herself. The nights with Blake allowed her to contemplate that maybe there could be more to the life she was living for the last five years.

It was as if she was giving herself permission to traverse the terrain of new love, the prospect of a different sort of existence than the one she’d had before, the opportunity to break free of the limited range of experience she had unknowingly resigned herself to just to survive.

Rachel wasn’t entirely certain if it was Blake himself who made her feel this way, or if it was finally giving herself permission to want more, but for the first time in a long time, Rachel felt like she was actively living again.

And if she wasn’t entirely certain about her feelings for Blake the man, she definitely knew she was smitten with the way he made her body feel. That, at least, was mutual. He didn’t seem to be able to stop touching her. He’d even invited her to hang out with him and Nicolas at Paradox, and once Oscar was in bed, Rachel hadn’t hesitated. Thoughts of Blake’s lips against hers, of his hands roving her body had motivated her to say yes even when she thought the actual hanging out with Nicolas part might be hopelessly awkward, but it hadn’t been. He’d needed to vent to his best friend, and Rachel had been impressed with the sympathetic ear and steady advice Blake had given. Rachel had offered to set up an appointment with her lawyer stepfather for him if he needed help with shelter, but Nicolas had refused.

Rachel felt bad for him, but she was not sorry for the opportunity to go home with Blake afterward. She’d ridden him hard and was still feeling languorous and relaxed from falling asleep next to him after her orgasm when Blake’s hands roving over her hips, then up her ribs and back, woke her for more.
