The passage and the lava channel ended in a round hole in a wall. The lava channel, and the lava, continued down at a forty-five-degree angle for some distance until it turned out of sight.

“This is the last tube,” said Wesi Reed and pulled out the vial that the Empu had given them. “There’s no way down except to ride it and there’s no way to ride it without sitting in the lava.”

“The burning hot, molten lava?” said Laden.

“Yes.”

“Just making sure.”

Wesi Reed took a swig from the vial and handed it to Drotyk. “The Empu says this will be proof against it, Venerable Brother.”

“How can you know that?” said Drotyk.

“Was the Empu right about the nightworm powder?”

“I said I was sorry,” said Roh.

“I know, Venerable Sister. I say only that the Empu has not led us astray.”

As Drotyk took a sip and passed it on, Wesi Reed said, “I don’t know how far the tube will take us but I expect it to empty into a pool of lava. Get out of it at once. I’m not sure how long this lasts.”

Drotyk snorted.

As Torant took a drink, Roh said, “We’re still going down.”

“Can’t be much farther,” said Laden. “Think about not being burned alive instead.”

Roh’s mouth twitched and she kept her eyes on Laden as she drank.

When she was done, Wesi Reed took the vial and stepped up to the opening of the hole, which was about as tall as she was. “Get to solid ground as soon as you can. And let me address the Naga.” Then she put her hands on the top of the opening and launched herself down the hole.
