Anthony continues to caress me softly and kiss the corner of my mouth. I’m wrapped in complete euphoria as he praises me with his hands, touching every place he can reach, until buzzing sounds out around us and his pants start to vibrate where my leg is pressed against him.

I turn and look to the foot of the bed where the buzzing seems to stem from. “Kind of late for a work call,” I laugh.

He smiles and rolls me off him before turning to face me. “Which is exactly why I won’t be answering.”

It stops ringing for a few seconds before it starts again. “Maybe you should. Seems someone really needs to talk to you.”

He rolls his eyes and reaches down to fish his phone from his pocket. Pulling the device up, he squints at the bright screen and quickly hits decline, but not before I see the name flash across the screen.

Isabella.

Immediately, my stomach sinks. Minutes ago I was on my knees below this man, completely forgetting he was just engaged. Engaged to a great woman and I can’t help but think what we’re doing could ruin her. It would feed into every piece of doubt she had in the first place.

And what if she wants him back now? What if he wants her? Where does that leave me and him? I wouldn’t be able to look him in the eye after tonight if that’s the case. Our friendship would be ruined. Years of memories down the drain.

He throws the device across the room and it falls into a pile of clothes in the corner. Gripping my chin, he pulls my face to his. “Hey. What’s wrong?”

I try to shake my head to hide the tears I feel brimming. “Nothing. I just think it’s time for me to go.”

His face scrunches as he pulls up on his elbow. “Whoa. Why?”

“Because this is crazy, Anthony. I don’t know what I was thinking and now Isabella is calling. I can’t be that woman.”

“That woman?” He questions.

“The one who ruins someone’s relationship. I don’t want to stand in the way of someone you could spend forever with just because we’re both horny.”

He shakes his head. “There is no relationship to ruin, Mia. She left me. She’s the one who decided she didn’t want to be with me. As for forever, you don’t think we have a shot?”

His face is so serious it makes my heart ache. Of course I’ve thought about him and me, but clearly not enough. The fact he just got out of a year long relationship–an engagement–should have been at the front of my mind but it wasn’t. I was too worried thinking about how good it would feel to fuck him.

“Do you?” I ask, not sure I want the answer.

“Of course I do. I’ve waited for this exact moment for years. You’re my best friend, Mia. I couldn’t picture spending life with anyone else. This shit with Isabella was a desperate attempt to rid myself of my feelings for you.
