A thick drizzle coated my hair and jacket by the time I got home, and I headed straight for the fire and its dying embers. As soon as I added a log or two, I’d have a lovely warming blaze.

A noise from the stairs made my heart race for a moment before I saw what had made the sound. Whisk. Darn. I’d forgotten to feed him.

“Whisk. I’m so sorry.”

The cat blinked and turned to go up the stairs. I hurried into the kitchen, poured some kibble in a bowl, and followed him up to the attic. Picking up the bowl I’d left there that morning, I placed the new bowl on the floor, but he backed away from me. He didn’t look afraid, but perhaps he wasn’t comfortable around me yet.

“Waiting for me to leave before you eat your dinner?” I asked. “I’m not going to try to catch you, I promise.”

“Brrraaah,” he trilled, twitching his tail.

“How am I supposed to interpret that?” He wanted something from me, but I had no idea what it might be.

I turned to go back downstairs when Whisk cried out, more insistently this time, “Yowrr.” He turned and ran to the far end of the attic.

“What is it, Boy?” I followed him, hoping he didn’t want to show me the corpse of some creature he’d caught. I had hoped having a mouser, as Harold had said, would mean I’d never have to see a critter in my home.

Had someone moved the furniture? I tried to remember how I’d left it but dismissed the idea. I noticed a beautiful desk for the first time, the type with lots of drawers and cubbies. Taking a closer look, I admired the finish and the detail. I lifted a corner to see if I’d be able to pick it up. It was heavy! I’d ask Mark to carry it downstairs for me.

A scratching sound made me turn toward the wall. The cat pawed at a board that had been pulled or pried off. I’d have to ask Mark if he’d been looking for termites, but I didn’t see any of the telltale signs of wood shavings. Not that I was an expert on such things.

Or had someone else pried the boards off the wall? In addition, several drawers had been pulled wide open. Had Bob been searching for something when I caught him in the house my first night in town? Is that why he was in my attic the day he died?

“Who was up here, Whisk?” I asked, but he simply purred in response and rubbed against my leg.

“If they come back, you have my permission to scratch their eyes out.”
