I had been a bit nervous about introducing Finlay to my parents, even though Finlay had already told me he had chatted with Dad for a while at the engagement party. But I needn’t have worried at all. Finlay was the embodiment of every parents’ perfect boyfriend for their offspring. I think he could charm the birds from the trees.

Even Asher had warmed to him by the time we all finished lunch, and Lottie told me, when she and I both nipped to the loo together, that, like me, she genuinely believed Finlay might actually be The One.

I laughed ecstatically. ‘I was beginning to doubt he existed. I thought I was doomed to either spend my life alone, or with a stream of utter bastards. Or dick-heads at the very least.’

‘And to think, only last week you were broken-hearted over Sean. Along comes Finlay Demon and suddenly everything has changed!’

If anyone other than Lottie had made that comment, I might have thought they were being facetious. It was the sort of thing Nathan Bromley would say. But although I didn’t know Lottie that well, I knew she had a heart of gold and that she didn’t mean anything derogatory by it. She was clearly happy for me. And she was almost as excited as I was when I told her of our plans for later.

‘You’re going to stay at the Easterhill Hotel tonight? Oh wow. Does Asher know?’

‘Er. No. And I know I shouldn’t ask you this, but please don’t tell him, Lottie.’

‘You want me to lie to him? I’m not sure I can do that, Sorcha.’

‘No. Not lie. Just don’t tell him.’

‘But what if he asks me if I know where you are?’

I grinned mischievously.

‘I need you to use your womanly wiles.’

‘My what?’ She laughed. ‘I’m not sure I have those.’

‘Of course you do. Asher’s crazy about you. All I need you to do is persuade him to have an early night. I’ll offer to take Merry out for a walk before bed – which I’ll do. And then I’ll bring her home, make sure she’s settled for the night, and sneak out again without Asher knowing.’

‘That might work. But what if he hears you?’

‘I’ll be as silent as the grave.’

‘And what about tomorrow morning?’

‘I’ll get back before he’s up.’

‘Are you sure? You know how early he gets up to go running.’

I grinned at her again. ‘You could persuade him to stay in bed.’

She laughed suddenly. ‘I think you’re confusing me with someone else. I’m hardly a sex goddess or anything.’

‘You are to Asher. Believe me. If you give him a choice between going running or staying in bed and having morning sex, I can guarantee which one he’ll choose. Most men would. And if you wear that lingerie we gave you last night, Asher will want to stay in bed all day.’

I’d taken Josie and Diana aside at Elsie’s and told them that I’d bought Lottie a joke present but that I wanted it to be from the three of us.
