Chapter Eleven

Leo had hoped that Jace was calling to tell them that all was well, but that hope vanished when he heard Jace’s words.

A dead body.

Two in one day, and Leo figured it wasn’t a coincidence that Jace had found it so close to Olivia’s house. No. This was connected to the attacks and the fires. Maybe even connected to her mother’s death. Hell. It could be all one tangled mess with her father at the center.

“Who’s dead?” Leo asked Jace.

“Not sure yet. That’s because he’s been shot in the face, and there’s not much left of it.”

Leo saw Olivia flinch, and he figured that had turned her stomach. It wasn’t an easy image to have in your head.

“I’ve got my CSIs on the way out here,” Jace went on, “and once they arrive and the scene is secured, I’ll have a look around. There’s no vehicle, no sign of a struggle in the immediate area. It looks like a body dump to me.”

A body dump that was probably meant to be some kind of message to Olivia. A warning maybe or perhaps just a tool to torment her. But who was he and why had he been used as that warning/torment? Had he been a hired gun who’d screwed up enough that it’d cost him his life? If so, then Leo sure as hell wouldn’t feel any sympathy for him. His only regret was that he wasn’t alive so they could possibly get answers from him.

Leo took a moment to gather his thoughts, looked at Olivia and figured she was going to need more than moment. He carried the laptops into the breakroom and put them on the table. Did the same to the files she was carrying. Then he turned to her.

Yeah, she needed some time.

She certainly wouldn’t want to go check on Cameron while her nerves were this frayed. Of course, there wasn’t much he could do to help with that, but Leo still pulled her to him. Olivia came into his arms as if she belonged there. Leo didn’t miss that, and apparently neither did she because the sound she made was part relief, part moan.

“I’m sorry,” he told her because he didn’t know what else to say.

It’d been a helluva morning what with being shot at, her house burned down, confronting her father and now this. Her life as she’d known it had vanished in a matter of a few hours. Added to that, they were about to take a step that could end up with Samuel being charged with murdering her mother. That would also mean he’d come darn close to getting Olivia killed, too.

“I’m trying to make sense of it,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.

He was doing the same thing, but it wasn’t adding up the way Leo wanted. He preferred it when all the pieces fit, and that wasn’t happening.

Unless...

If Samuel had truly
