Chapter 11

Jack and Mark were back at their house, enjoying some whiskey from a small, secret stash upstairs where they kept the miniature bottles of liquor from the plane. There weren’t too many of them left and they were solely for the pilots’ use. Once in a while they would make themselves a real drink and appreciate the royal taste, so different and so incomparably better than the moonshine and home-made wine they drank on an every-day basis.

When Mark went upstairs to get two small bottles for them, he realized Anna’s wallet was missing. He immediately informed Jack and they both knew it had to be one of the four newcomers who took it. Rick or Matylda most probably, the pilots did not suspect Dan nor Anna to have entered their house and sneak around, they were assimilating nicely. Rick and Matylda on the other hand, yes. They certainly might have done it.

The two men were sitting by the table, the fireplace glow was warming up their faces, and they were thinking about what to do with the newcomers. Because something had to be done, that was beyond any doubt.

“We might just, you know, repeat the Robert and Judy scenario?” Mark said, took a sip and cleared his throat when he felt the liquor slightly burning and warming him up from the inside.

“We promised each other we wouldn’t do it again,” Jack sighed heavily.

Robert and Judy were a young married couple who, willingly or not, had created chaos that spread doubts among the Community. The unfortunate thing about them was that they met during an AA meetings and were both extremely religious and extremely sober.

When the passengers and the crew discovered the village and began settling there, Jack and Mark were immediately treated with huge respect as those that had saved them all from certain death. At first the pilots, who were as stunned and disoriented as everyone else around them, felt embarrassed by the omnipresent atmosphere of thankfulness around them. Especially since neither of them had any idea how they got there but both knew it wasn’t because of them. They were in the sky, then they were on the ground. Their biggest advantage was that they regained consciousness first. Most likely because when the emergency got bad enough, the pilots were required to don their oxygen masks per protocol. However, due to their importance on board, they quite naturally became the leaders of the group they had been a part of.

Unknowingly, Sam and another flight attendant, Gina, had reinforced this by obeying their instructions to the letter. As a stewardess, she wouldn’t dream of disobeying her superiors. Thanks to Sam and Gina, it turned out that the confused people were willingly doing what they were told by the two of them, agreeing to their ideas and orders. They started using their position to become the only true leaders and the passengers soon turned into their followers. Especially, when they discovered the still and barrels of moonshine in one of the houses.
